Fugen Constructions successfully delivered the refurbishment and extension of The Mercantile Hotel, an iconic heritage-listed building in Sydney’s The Rocks and Australia’s longest-running Irish pub.
Originally built in 1914, the project carefully balanced the preservation of the hotel’s heritage character with the delivery of modern hospitality facilities. Working closely with the client and consultant team, Fugen delivered practical and cost-effective construction solutions that met compliance requirements while preserving the building’s heritage features.
The refurbishment included the construction of a new rooftop terrace featuring a bar, restaurant, amenities, and plant room, creating a vibrant new destination within the venue. The rooftop space offers visitors views of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and the surrounding area of The Rocks.
Additional works included the upgrade of guest accommodation rooms, refurbishment of ground-floor amenities and courtyard spaces, installation of a new commercial kitchen and back-of-house facilities, the addition of a new lift to improve accessibility, and fire compliance upgrades throughout the building.
The completed project has enhanced The Mercantile Hotel with modern facilities and improved accessibility while maintaining the heritage character that makes it one of the most recognisable venues in The Rocks.
