Westmead Hospital Refurbishment Stage 3 Operating Theatres 9-16

Client: Health Infrastructure
Value: Undisclosed

Fugen Constructions is proud to have successfully delivered the refurbishment of Operating Theatres 9–16 at Westmead Hospital, as part of the NSW Government’s $1 billion Westmead Redevelopment Program.

Working closely with Health Infrastructure NSW and the Western Sydney Local Health District, our team undertook a complex live hospital upgrade—demolishing and rebuilding eight operating theatres along with:

  • Sterile stockrooms
  • Anaesthetic bays
  • Scrub bays
  • Exit bays
  • Critical theatre support zones

In addition, we converted an underutilised outdoor space into a light-filled staff breakout room, offering essential respite for theatre personnel.

Delivering construction in a fully operational hospital required detailed planning, strong stakeholder engagement, and precision execution. To maintain clinical services and infection control, we implemented the following strategies:

  • Constructed a dedicated Level 3 façade entry point to isolate construction activity
  • Maintained strict separation between work zones and live hospital areas
  • Ensured continuous operation of adjacent theatres through infection control protocols
  • Coordinated works with hospital staff to minimise disruption to critical departments, including Radiology directly below
  • Designed and delivered a cost-neutral mechanical system upgrade supporting both new and existing theatres

Before construction commenced, Fugen worked with key stakeholders to finalise the design, providing buildability advice to improve outcomes, reduce risk, and maintain program efficiency.

This collaborative approach enabled seamless integration of clinical and engineering requirements into the construction process, critical in a highly sensitive health environment.
